See the Alps in a $ 60 million Swarovski crystal-encrusted gondola – Robb Report

Talk about exaggeration. Ski resort fun may have found a new high with the Matterhorn Glacier Ride in Zermatt, Switzerland, which offers views of one of Europe’s highest mountains from an ornate $ 60 million gondola. one million Swarovski crystals. And its claim to fame goes beyond its hefty price tag and Instagramable decor. The gondola is the highest three-cable gondola in the world and operates from the highest mountain station in Europe. If that’s not enough for you, it also comes with a glass bottom for an added thrill.

The ride, which opened in late November, is a collaboration between Italian lift maker Leitner Ropeways, automotive design house Pininfarina and the Swarovski crystal empire, according to Bloomberg. It climbs to 2,950 feet in nine minutes on 2.5 mile long cables from Trockener Stage to the Klein Matterhorn, where it drops passengers at a breathtaking 12,740 feet.

Crystal Cabins are more than attention-grabbing tourist attractions – they triple in capacity, relieving a 40-year-old system that made passengers wait up to an hour and a half to reach the top of the mountain.

The new $ 60 million elevator is the second after Austria’s $ 72 million Stubai Glacier Ride, and for two and a half years it was the continent’s tallest construction site. Tickets for the Matterhorn Glacier Ride, however, will only cost $ 10 apiece. By 2021, two more ski lifts will be erected to serve 335 mountainous miles between Switzerland and Italy.

But if you’d rather stay anchored, the Klein Matterhorn already offers snow tubing, a futuristic movie theater, and an underground glacial palace.
